How Not to Pick Your Password

Whether you’re using a dating site or ordering your groceries you should always ensure that the site you’re using is reputable and trustworthy. Your personal information is incredibly valuable to certain people who would want to use it for no good.

However as much as the websites we use have a responsibilty to keep our details safe,  so do we.

Daily Infographic has released a list of the top 20 passwords of all time put together by ZoneAlarm. These are the most popular passwords which means that a hacker is going to try these first (who’d have guessed Princess would be so popular?) If you recognise any of them – CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD NOW! These are a few of the highlights.

  • An estimated 4% of people use some variant of the word ‘password’
  • 25% of the top 20 passwords are first names.
  • 16% of all people use the a first name as their password

For those who do recognise their password here are some of the helpful tips on how to create a better one.

  • Use at least 8 characters. At least 14 is best
  • The more different types of characters you use the better
  • Choose characters from across the whole keyboard
